How it opens
Armies wait in a vast camp at the Field of Merrilor on the night before a meeting of the rulers, and Rand al'Thor walks it with his friend Perrin as the ground shakes beneath them. Then word comes that Trollocs have struck Caemlyn, and wounded soldiers and refugees pour through gateways into Elayne's camp from the burning city. At the Black Tower, the Red sister Pevara and the Asha'man Androl try to link in a circle and come out of it bonded to each other. Back at Merrilor, Aviendha slips past Elayne's guards and sits down in her tent before anyone notices her.
Who you meet early
- Rand al'ThorRand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, has called the rulers to a meeting at Merrilor in the morning. He carries Lews Therin's memories as his own now, and he means to break the seals on the Dark One's prison.
- Perrin AybaraPerrin Aybara leads a camp beside Rand's as large as any on the field, Whitecloaks among them. He backs Rand on the seals but makes him promise not to let it come to blows.
- Egwene al'VereEgwene al'Vere is the Amyrlin Seat and the Watcher of the Seals, with Gawyn as her Warder. She opposes breaking the seals at the start of the Last Battle and holds that choosing the moment is her duty.
- Elayne TrakandElayne Trakand is Queen of Andor and pregnant with Rand's children. She is camped at Merrilor beside Egwene, with Birgitte at her side.
- AviendhaAviendha is a Wise One now, after a journey to Rhuidean. She comes to Merrilor by night to see Elayne, her first-sister, and then Rand.
- Nynaeve al'MearaNynaeve al'Meara is an Aes Sedai who answers the call for Healing when the wounded come through from Caemlyn. She Heals Talmanes, a man so far gone that Egwene first takes him for dead.
- Androl GenhaldAndrol is a leatherworker at the Black Tower and the weakest of the Asha'man who follow him. With Taim's men turning others to the Shadow, he has gone to Pevara for help.
- Pevara TazanovniPevara is a Red sister from Kandor who came to the Black Tower to bond Asha'man. Her sisters there have all been taken, and she is the last.
