How it opens
On High Chasaline, in heat and drought when the weather should be cold, Perrin Aybara sits inside a wagon circle on a hilltop, the day after the battle at Dumai's Wells. The camp holds nearly two dozen Aes Sedai prisoners, each watched by an Asha'man, and the Aiel and the Cairhienin finger their weapons whenever they look at each other. Rand al'Thor walks back up from the battlefield with Min on his arm and settles the quarrel over the prisoners by giving them into the care of the Wise Ones. Then he sends Mazrim Taim and the Asha'man back to the Black Tower, keeps a handful for himself, and asks one of them for a gateway to Cairhien.
Who you meet early
- Perrin AybaraPerrin Aybara brought the rescue to Dumai's Wells, and about three hundred Two Rivers men followed him there. They call him Lord Perrin, a title he hates. He worries about his wife, Faile, who seemed glad to see him leave Cairhien.
- Rand al'ThorRand al'Thor is the Dragon Reborn and the Car'a'carn of the Aiel. He is free again after a group of Aes Sedai kidnapped him, though Galina, the Red sister who held him prisoner, got away.
- LoialLoial is an Ogier who fought at Perrin's side at Dumai's Wells with an axe nearly as long as he is tall. He is taking notes for a book about the Dragon Reborn.
- Kiruna NachimanKiruna Nachiman is a Green sister and the sister of King Paitar of Arafel. She and Bera Harkin lead the nine Aes Sedai who came to Dumai's Wells with Perrin, and at the battle's end all nine knelt and swore fealty to the Dragon Reborn.
- SorileaSorilea is the Wise One of Shende Hold, a Jarra Chareen with thin white hair and a leathery face. Wherever she goes, leadership settles on her, and she is among the Wise Ones who came from Cairhien.
- AmysAmys is a Wise One of the Taardad Aiel and a dreamwalker who was once a Maiden of the Spear. She ranks second among the Wise Ones to Sorilea, and Rhuarc is her husband.
- RhuarcRhuarc is clan chief of the Taardad Aiel and husband to Amys. Since last night he has been out scouting with a thousand spears, and he reports the Shaido still fleeing east.
- Mazrim TaimMazrim Taim was a false Dragon who raised an army and ravaged Saldaea. Rand named him the second Asha'man, and he leads the men at the Black Tower, who call him the M'Hael.
