Egwene al'Vere is the youngest daughter of Bran and Marin al'Vere, who keep the Winespring Inn at Emond's Field, a village deep in the Two Rivers where nothing is thought to change. She has just won the right to wear her hair in the braid of a grown woman, and she has been taken on as apprentice to Nynaeve al'Meara, the village Wisdom, a post that answers only part of her restless curiosity about the world beyond the Westwood. Egwene is clever, stubborn, and quick to stand her ground with anyone, including her childhood friend Rand al'Thor. When Trollocs strike the village on Winternight and the Aes Sedai Moiraine leads a small party away to draw the danger off, Egwene insists on going, choosing the road and whatever it holds over the life laid out for her at home.
