Nynaeve al'Meara
Nynaeve al'Meara was the Wisdom of Emond's Field, the youngest woman ever chosen for the role, trusted by her village to heal the sick and read the weather while she was still little more than a girl herself.
Nynaeve al'Meara holds her position in a hard season. An unseasonal frost lingers over the Two Rivers as Bel Tine approaches, and tension in Emond's Field over the weather falls on the Wisdom, whose duties include reading what the seasons will bring. She is often at odds with the men of the Village Council, and she does not hide her opinion of them.
When the peddler Padan Fain arrives during Festival with news of a war in Ghealdan, a man who can channel the One Power believed to be a false Dragon, and Aes Sedai riding south from Tar Valon, the Council sequesters Fain in the Winespring Inn for private questioning. Nynaeve goes into the inn to question the peddler herself, convinced the Council will ask the wrong questions. During the same Festival she scolds Mat Cauthon for recklessly tempting Old Bili Congar to name the Dark One.
The news from outside is not the only strangeness in the village that spring. Rand, Mat, and Perrin have each seen a black-cloaked rider near Emond's Field, and two strangers, a woman named Moiraine and a man named Lan, have arrived and taken rooms at the inn. Nynaeve is among those the young men and Egwene tell about the rider as they weigh Fain's news.
