The Eye of the World
Book 1 of 14 in The Wheel of Time
How it opens
Spring is a month late in the Two Rivers, and Rand al'Thor and his father Tam are taking cider and apple brandy into Emond's Field for the Bel Tine festival. On the road Rand sees a rider in a black cloak, on a black horse, following them, and then the rider is simply gone, though his friend Mat has seen the same figure. Emond's Field already has strangers in it: a gleeman, and a lady named Moiraine with a companion called Lan. Moiraine presses a silver coin into Rand's hand and asks him to keep it with him.
