Loial was a young Ogier from Stedding Shangtai with an unusual hunger for the world beyond his home, a scholar at heart who carried his notes into places most of his kind would never go.

The world first meets Loial in the library of The Queen's Blessing, an inn in Caemlyn, where he has kept to himself among the shelves for four days. He left Stedding Shangtai against the wishes of the Elders, drawn out by a longing to see the world with his own eyes and to walk among the groves his people planted long ago beside the cities they built. It is a rare hunger among the Ogier, whose lives run slow and rooted, and it marks him as young and restless by the measure of his kind.

A scholar in temperament as much as in habit, Loial is never without his notes or short of questions. He knows the old lore of the Ogier well, including their place in the Pattern and the ancient knowledge of the Ways, though that last he speaks of carefully, for it is knowledge weighted with danger. He can explain what ta'veren means, how certain lives bend the weave of the Pattern around them, with the patience of someone who has spent years in study and would dearly love company in it.

Beneath the learning sits a gentle, sociable nature. Days alone in a human library have left him eager for company, and he offers friendship openly, without guile. Anxiety and enthusiasm live side by side in him, the caution of a people who rarely leave home and the delight of one who finally has.
