How it opens
The first snow of winter falls on Velaris a week before the Winter Solstice, and Feyre, High Lady of the Night Court, has been sent home from her volunteer work to enjoy the holiday. She sets her mind on buying presents for all of her friends. In the Illyrian Mountains, Rhysand joins Cassian in pressing the camp-lord Devlon to let the girls of the Windhaven camp train during the Solstice preparations. Cassian warns that dissension is brewing among the Illyrians, some of whom believe they were sent into battle as revenge.
Who you meet early
- Feyre ArcheronFeyre is High Lady of the Night Court and Rhysand's mate, kept busy with the rebuilding of Velaris after the war with Hybern. She lives with him at the town house, where Elain also has a room.
- RhysandRhysand, High Lord of the Night Court, has spent these months visiting the court's war allies to build trade and keep an eye on their plans now that the wall is gone.
- CassianCassian leads the Night Court's armies and is at the Windhaven camp, pressing Devlon to let the Illyrian girls train. He brings Rhysand word of growing unrest among the Illyrians after their losses in the war.
- DevlonDevlon is the Illyrian camp-lord at Windhaven, the warrior who trained Rhysand and Cassian when they were young. He wants the camp's girls kept at Solstice chores instead of training.
- NualaNuala is a half-wraith who cooks at the town house in Velaris. She and her twin, Cerridwen, also spy for Rhysand and Azriel.
