Mat Cauthon
Matrim Cauthon, known to everyone as Mat, is a young man from Emond's Field in the Two Rivers, wiry and quick-eyed, with a reputation for mischief that follows him like a shadow.
Mat is the closest of friends to Rand al'Thor and Perrin Aybara, and where one of them is found, the others are rarely far behind. He belongs to the generation of Two Rivers boys old enough to be trusted with real work but young enough to dodge most of it, the sort who can be counted on to help unload barrels of cider at the Winespring Inn and counted on just as surely to make the chore last twice as long as it should. His latest bit of trouble, a matter involving flour and the blacksmith's dogs, is the kind of thing he keeps quiet about while the whole village works out for itself exactly who was responsible.
The world Mat moves through is a small one, and he knows every corner of it. Emond's Field sits deep in the Two Rivers, hemmed by the Westwood and the distant Mountains of Mist, far from anywhere that matters to anyone but the people who live there. The village gathers around its Green and its inn, and in the days before Bel Tine, even with an unseasonal frost gripping the land, it hums with preparation for the Festival.
Nothing delights Mat quite like a stranger. A gleeman, a peddler, any new face at all is an occasion, and any scrap of news from beyond Taren Ferry is worth turning over a dozen times. Restless, curious, and quicker with a grin than an apology, he treats the wide world as one more thing to be excited about, safely far away.
