New Spring
A prequel to The Wheel of Time
How it opens
Outside the island city of Tar Valon, a huge army has fought the Aiel in the snow for three days, and Lan Mandragoran rides with his company to hold a ridge called the Hook. Some two thousand Aiel come out of the trees, halt, shout a single word in the Old Tongue and turn away. Inside the White Tower, Moiraine and her friend Siuan, both Accepted, wait on the Amyrlin Seat, Tamra, and her Keeper, Gitara. Then Gitara falls dead after crying out a Foretelling that the Dragon is born again on the slope of Dragonmount, and Tamra orders the two young women to tell no one.
