Wool
Book 1 of 3 in Silo Saga · by Hugh Howey
How it opens
Holston has spent most of his life as sheriff of the silo, a buried home for thousands of people, and three years ago his wife, Allison, was put to cleaning. One morning he climbs to the top level, leaves his star on the desk in his office, locks himself in the holding cell and tells his deputy, Marnes, to fetch the mayor, because he wants to go outside. He spends his last day in the cell, studying the blurry view of lifeless hills on the wall screen and thinking of Allison. Mayor Jahns visits and asks whether he plans to clean the sensors, as every cleaner before him has done, and Holston refuses to give her an answer.
