Holston

Holston is the sheriff of the silo, the underground community. For years he has kept its laws from a small office beside the cafeteria on the top floor, where a wallscreen shows the ruined, forbidden world outside. He is respected, deliberate, and quiet, a lawman people trust without quite knowing him. Three years before, his wife Allison was sent out to a cleaning, the silo's oldest and harshest sentence, and Holston has lived alongside her absence ever since, climbing each morning toward the view that holds her hillside. He makes a slow climb up the last flights of the great staircase, turning over a decision he has carried in silence. The holding cell at the top is one he knows well, from the other side of the bars.
