Marnes is the deputy at the desk in the sheriff's office on the silo's upper level, beside the holding cell, when Holston, his boss, asks him for its key.
Marnes is already at work, shutting a squeaky drawer of the filing cabinet and picking up a steaming mug, when his boss walks in and he teases him for being up early. He reads the solemn look at once and asks whether everything is all right. Unless someone is in cuffs, the only reason to go into the cell is to mop it, so his first guess is that the mop is wanted.
By tradition, on the night before a cleaning he stays at his post until morning.
