How it opens
In 2049, Senator Paul Thurman calls Donald Keene, a freshman congressman from Georgia, to his office in Washington. Thurman hands him a folder that holds a drawing Donald made for a college class and asks him to design a building for CAD-FAC, the facility at the heart of the Senator's new energy bill. Thurman calls it a shelter for the facility's workers, names his daughter Anna as lead engineer and says the building has to go underground. In 2110, in Silo 1, a man called Troy wakes from decades of sleep for a six-month shift, rides the lift to the top, sees the scorched hills on the cafeteria's wall screen and hurries away to cry alone.
