Sunrise on the Reaping
A prequel to The Hunger Games · by Suzanne Collins
How it opens
Haymitch Abernathy turns sixteen on reaping day in District 12, in the year of the second Quarter Quell, when twice as many tributes are drawn. He spends the morning working at Hattie Meeney's still in the woods, then meets his girl, Lenore Dove, who gives him a flint striker for his birthday. At the reaping one of the boys drawn, Woodbine Chance, runs for an alley and is shot, and Haymitch is clubbed with a rifle butt when he jumps in to shield Lenore Dove. The Capitol escort, Drusilla Sickle, makes Haymitch the replacement and calls his name on the live broadcast as if it had been drawn.
