Burdock Everdeen is a boy from the Seam of District 12 in Sunrise on the Reaping and a childhood friend of Haymitch Abernathy, who calls him Burdie. He slips under the district fence into the woods constantly, and it is Burdock who talks Haymitch into going out there for the first time when the two of them are ten, singing on the way to show him how the mockingjays sing back. As a teenager he hunts and trades game, prizes a set of arrows made by Tam Amber, and takes up wildcrafting, carrying what he gathers to the apothecary in the merchant part of the district to trade with a healer named Asterid March, whom he impresses with his singing voice.
