How it opens

In Urithiru, two days free of occupation, Kaladin has stepped down as leader of the Windrunners after the death of Teft. Under a deal Dalinar made with the enemy, the champions of Honor and Odium meet in ten days to decide the fate of all Roshar. As Kaladin rests with his family, he hears the wind speak his name and ask for his help, warning of the worst storm. In Shadesmar, at the honorspren fortress of Lasting Integrity, Shallan sits with Testament, the spren she hurt as a child.

Who you meet early

• KaladinKaladin has stepped down as leader of the Windrunners and is resting with his family in Urithiru after Teft's funeral. He has resolved to go to Shinovar to look for the Herald Ishi at Dalinar's request.
• HesinaHesina, Kaladin's mother, lives in the family's quarters in Urithiru with Lirin and Kaladin's little brother, Oroden.
• LirinLirin, Kaladin's father, is a surgeon studying the tent layouts and procedures of Dalinar's medical corps. He has been warned to expect heavy casualties in the next few days.
• OrodenOroden is Kaladin's little brother, a small boy who calls him Gagadin.
• Shallan DavarShallan Davar is with Adolin at Lasting Integrity, the honorspren fortress in Shadesmar. She has bonded two spren, Pattern and Testament, and as a child she rejected her bond with Testament.
• PatternPattern, one of the two spren Shallan has bonded, is with her at Lasting Integrity. He thinks some connection between Shallan and Testament persists.
• TestamentTestament, the first spren Shallan bonded, is a deadeye, her pattern scratched and almost frozen. Shallan rejected the bond as a child.
