Lirin
Lirin is Hearthstone's surgeon and Kaladin's father in The Way of Kings, a bespectacled darkeyed idealist who treats the sick without charge and holds a surgeon's work above any soldier's.
Lirin is the surgeon of the town of Hearthstone in Alethkar and the father of Kaladin. A short, balding, bespectacled man of the second nahn, he holds a standing rare for a darkeyes: trained in medicine, keeper of the town's surgery room, and stubborn enough to treat patients without demanding payment even when his own family's stores run thin. Lirin's convictions cut against the Alethi grain. He holds that war is waste, that a man who saves lives outranks any number of men who take them, and he sets his hopes on his son accordingly, training Kaladin from boyhood to follow him into surgery and to test for the great medical schools of Kharbranth. His wife is Hesina; his younger son is Tien.
