Kaladin is a young Alethi soldier reduced to slavery, a repeat runaway whose brand, the shash glyph, marks him as dangerous.
In his days in Brightlord Amaram's army, men called him Kaladin Stormblessed, a squadleader whose squad lost the fewest men. He carried a spear a hand longer than the rest, spent most of his pay bribing the runners who carry the wounded off the field, and knew more about wounds than a lowly darkeyed spearman should. He watched a lighteyed officer with a seething hatred. Caged in a slaver's wagon, he hears his father's careful voice reciting a cure when a sick man in his cage begins to cough.
