Pattern

Pattern is an unusual entity in the Stormlight Archive. He manifests as a complex, symmetrical figure of shifting lines, like a maze embossed into whatever surface he crosses, raising cloth or stone the way iron scrollwork lifts a taut tablecloth, and he moves by sliding along walls, floors, and fabric. Roshar teems with spren, minor spirits that gather around emotions and phenomena, but Pattern does not behave like the common kinds: he hums, he speaks, and he pursues understanding with a scholar's appetite, delighting in every new concept and testing each one aloud. Truths and lies fascinate him above everything else; he calls lies beautiful and studies them the way a jeweler studies stones. His name is a convenience, since his real one is, by his own account, closer to numbers than to words.
