How it opens

In Manhattan, Jake Chambers, Oy and Pere Callahan walk into the Dixie Pig to go after Susannah, and Jake reckons there are close to a hundred low men and vampires inside. Callahan holds up a scrimshaw turtle that keeps most of the room in their seats, and Roland, reaching him from far away, speaks through Callahan's mouth to order Jake on. Jake flees with Oy, and Callahan stays to hold off the ancient vampires until, overwhelmed, he turns the gun on himself. Meanwhile Roland and Eddie, driving away from a writer's house in 1977 Maine, are lifted out of the world on a great wave and see Susannah lying beside Mia, the two joined by metal hoods.
