Jake Chambers

Introduced in The Gunslinger, Jake Chambers is a boy the gunslinger comes upon at a lonely way station in the desert. He is about twelve, polite and self-possessed, with the composure of someone much older. Jake carries only hazy memories of another life, one lived in a city of tall towers, and he cannot say how he came to the desert or the way station. He speaks carefully, keeps his head, and holds up under the strangeness of a world of dust, ruins, and old machines. In a story that follows the last gunslinger of a world that has moved on, Jake enters as a small mystery: a well-mannered boy from somewhere else, waiting where nothing else lives.
