Roland Deschain is a gunslinger who came long ago out of In-World, following the man in black over the desert of a world that has moved on, with his father's guns at his hips.

Roland Deschain crosses the desert hung about with water, the last of his breed and a speaker of the High Speech. A dweller named Brown, a scrawny, sunburnt man with a wild shock of red hair and a crow on his shoulder, gives him a meal and points him southeast, and the two part with a wish of long days and pleasant nights, which Roland returns twice over.

Out in the desert his thoughts keep turning to Cort, the man who taught him to shoot, who knew black from white.
