How it opens
An army of about fifty thousand camps outside Luthadel, and King Elend Venture watches it from the city wall. The army belongs to Straff Venture, Elend's own father, and Elend has barely twenty thousand peasant soldiers. That night Vin fights off eight assassins in the misty streets, one of them a hidden Mistborn, and she burns her last bead of atium in the fight. A man she calls the Watcher looks on from a rooftop and kills one of the assassins.
Who you meet early
- Elend VentureElend Venture is king of the Central Dominance, a year after the Lord Ruler's death. His father's army now camps outside Luthadel.
- VinVin is the Mistborn who killed the Lord Ruler, trained by Kelsier. A year later she guards Elend, the man she loves, from assassins at night.
- HammondHam was part of Kelsier's crew, the group that planned the overthrow of the empire. He now stands with Elend on the wall and counts the army outside.
