How it opens
Signum Dinios Kol of the Iudex arrives by canal boat in Yarrowdale, a northern port town far from the Empire proper, ahead of his immunis. Signum Tira Malo, an Apoth warden with altered senses, is lying on a hillock near the start of the road, and she takes him to the ossuary. Mineti Sujedo, a Treasury immunis, vanished one night from a locked room with a guard at the door, and five days later the Apoths pulled remains from the canals that they identify as his by the Treasury blood in them. Din engraves the remains and finds rope marks at the wrist, but there are no witnesses and no suspects.
