Verin Mathwin was a Brown Ajah scholar among the Aes Sedai who accompanied Siuan Sanche to Fal Dara, sharp-eyed and quietly methodical, more interested in understanding what she found than in reporting it to anyone.
A plump woman in the plain wool of her Ajah, Verin moves through the White Tower the way Browns often do, present in a room without ever seeming to demand it. In the halls of Tar Valon she is one face among many sisters, easy to overlook beside the grand and the ambitious, yet she is the kind of woman entrusted with the quiet offices of Tower life, the escorting of the tested back up into daylight, the holding of what must be held while others face harder things. Small duties suit her, and she performs them without fuss.
Her true work is knowing. Verin gathers information the way other women gather silk or influence, patiently, thoroughly, and with evident pleasure in the work. She can explain a complicated matter plainly when explanation is wanted, and she gives fair warning where danger lies, not to frighten but because a careful mind counts it wasteful to let anyone walk unprepared. Those in her care receive encouragement rather than mockery, and a steady, watchful sort of kindness.
There is nothing hurried about her. Where the Tower runs on ceremony and station, Verin keeps to her scholarship and her own counsel, sharp-eyed beneath a comfortable exterior. She notices more than she remarks on, and she keeps what she learns, filed away in a methodical mind. She is a good deal more careful than she looks.
