Third Age
The Third Age is the age in which The Wheel of Time takes place, three and a half thousand years running from the Breaking of the World to the present, called by some the Age of Prophecy.
The Third Age is the present of The Wheel of Time, the age in which The Eye of the World, opens. It begins in the chaos of the Breaking of the World, when the madness of the male Aes Sedai ended the Age of Legends, and by the opening it has run some three and a half thousand years. Historians divide it into three eras: After the Breaking, when scattered survivors rebuilt; the Free Years, reckoned after the ruin of the Trolloc Wars; and the New Era, dating from the end of the War of the Hundred Years that followed Artur Hawkwing's death. Some call it the Age of Prophecy, for through its whole length the Prophecies of the Dragon have promised that the Dragon will be born again to face the Dark One in the Last Battle, and the White Tower has spent the age preparing the world for that meeting.
