The Third Age is the age in which The Wheel of Time takes place, running from the Breaking of the World to the present.
The Third Age is the present of The Wheel of Time, the age in which The Eye of the World, opens. It begins in the chaos of the Breaking of the World, when the madness of the male Aes Sedai ended the Age of Legends. Historians divide it into three eras: After the Breaking, when scattered survivors rebuilt; the Free Years, reckoned after the ruin of the Trolloc Wars; and the New Era, dating from the end of the War of the Hundred Years that followed Artur Hawkwing's death.
