The Wheel of Time is the great cycle that turns the Ages and weaves the Pattern of an Age from the threads of human lives. It has neither beginning nor ending, it is driven by the True Source, whose male and female halves pull against each other even as they work together to turn it, and it answers to no will but its own. The Pattern it weaves can take up small changes in a single life-thread, but it sometimes refuses large ones. Certain people, called ta'veren, are points where the Wheel bends the threads around them, so that other lives swirl into a web woven about them. A few souls are bound to the Wheel and spun out again and again across the Ages to work its will. No one sees the whole Pattern, not even the Pattern of one Age, and knowledge itself can be lost in the turnings of the Wheel. Its turning is without pity or mercy, and it takes no notice of any single thread.
