Sumeko Karistovan was a Wise Woman of Ebou Dar, an Arafellin woman of long years who wore the red belt of her calling and carried herself with the quiet authority that came with it.
Sumeko Karistovan was born in Arafel, though Ebou Dar had long since become her home and the seat of her work. She was not alone in her calling there. Other women of the same belt worked in the city beside her, Tamarla, Melore, Famelle, and Laren among them.
The quieter half of her life was the Kin, a company of women in Ebou Dar who kept the fact of their fellowship a close secret. The Kin met behind closed doors at a house in the city and maintained a retreat beyond it, and their number included women such as Reanne Corly, Berowin, Garenia, Derys, and Sarainya Vostovan. Secrecy was a discipline with them.
Sumeko fitted the two lives together without a visible seam. The belt at her waist gave her a public place in Ebou Dar, and the Kin gave her a private one, and she kept the border between them with the same care as any woman of the company.
