Shienar
Shienar is the easternmost of the Borderland nations, a land of walled towns and armored lancers that keeps unending watch on the Blight from the marches below the Mountains of Dhoom.
Shienar is the first Borderland nation The Wheel of Time visits, near the close of The Eye of the World. It lies in the far northeast between Arafel and the Spine of the World, under the sign of a swooping black hawk, with its capital at Fal Moran and the fortress town of Fal Dara standing close to Tarwin's Gap, the pass through which the Blight's armies come when they come. War with the Shadow shapes everything. Shienaran men shave their heads to a topknot and spend much of their lives in lacquered armor; towns are walled and gates are barred at dark against what the night may carry; and courtesy is a discipline, with peace named in every greeting because peace is the one thing no Shienaran has ever seen. Travelers count Shienaran heavy cavalry among the finest in the world, and Shienaran hosts among the most gravely courteous people they will ever meet.
