Shalon din Togara Morning Tide is a woman of the Atha'an Miere, and her world is a ship's world. Her place is aboard the White Spray, riding at anchor in the river below Cairhien. A Sea Folk vessel is its own small nation: matters of consequence are heard in the stern cabin rather than carried ashore, and visitors come to the deck instead of the other way around.
She does not keep that deck alone. With her are Harine din Togara Two Winds, who bears the same second name she does, Derah din Selaan Rising Wave, and Taval din Chanai Nine Gulls. Among the Atha'an Miere, those long, rolling names carry standing as surely as any mainland title carries rank.
On the bank stands Cairhien with its Sun Palace, close enough to see from the rail. Aboard, the order is the ship's own; Shalon's office gives her a settled place within it.
