Shadar Logoth
Shadar Logoth is a ruined city on the River Arinelle, once proud Aridhol, emptied centuries ago by an evil of its own making, where travelers are warned to touch nothing and shun the killing mist.
Shadar Logoth appears early in The Eye of the World, the first book of The Wheel of Time, when travelers on the Caemlyn Road take shelter in its ruins. Long ago it was Aridhol, an ally of Manetheren against the Shadow in the Trolloc Wars. In those years a counselor named Mordeth won the city to the creed that any deed was justified to defeat the Dark One, and suspicion and ruthlessness fed on themselves until Aridhol consumed itself from within. What killed the city was not the Shadow but its own darkness, and that darkness remains. The walls stand whole and utterly empty; no weed grows and no bird sings; and after dark comes Mashadar, a glowing fog that kills whatever it touches. Even Trollocs cannot be driven inside except at direst need. Those who know the story give the ruin a wide berth, and warn that nothing within its walls, however small, may safely be carried out.
