Military rank

Every army in the Westlands keeps its own ladder of command, and the rungs rarely line up from one banner to the next. In Andor the Queen's Guard counts rank in golden knots at the collar, one for an under-lieutenant and three for a captain, while Cairhienin officers carry their house colors on their backs instead. The Children of the Light grade themselves from Lord Captain down through Hundredman, Bannerman and Squadman to file leader. What a title is actually worth depends on whose banner flies above it. A captain may command a few dozen heavy horse under one lord and something close to a small army under another.
