Juilin Sandar was a thief-catcher from Tear, dark-skinned and quietly professional, who went about his work with a notched sword-breaker and a slim bamboo quarterstaff.

Juilin Sandar hunted thieves for a living in the muddy streets of Tear, and by the account of those who knew the city, no one did it better. Mother Guenna, the Wise Woman Ailhuin, counted him the most skilled thief-catcher in Tear, and it was the sort of reputation that mattered in a place where the Stone loomed over the docks and stolen goods had a way of vanishing into the lanes below it. Finding what had been taken, and the people who took it, was his particular craft.

He treated that craft as a profession rather than an adventure. He was plain about his fees and plain about his methods, and when a task looked dangerous he said so before he took it; he had other commitments, and he weighed new work against them like any careful tradesman. Once he accepted a job, though, he took it seriously, whatever the risk attached.

He was a man willing to follow instructions and to put up with hard conditions when the work demanded it. His discomforts were small and honest ones, prolonged hours in a saddle among them, for he was a creature of city streets, not roads. Within his own ground, he knew exactly what he was doing.
