Joiya Byir passed for just what her shawl announced, a sister of the Gray about her Ajah's ordinary business, and nothing in her manner invited a second question from anyone. The appearance was a working disguise. Her true allegiance lay with the Black Ajah, women hidden among their fellow Aes Sedai in service to the Dark One.

Her company was Liandrin's. Rianna and Amico Nagoyin belonged to it as well, sisters who had made the same hidden choice, and the group answered to a purpose larger than any single member of it, set from far above. It was a careful company, quiet about its aims and silent about its masters.

Concealment was the craft of such a life, and Joiya practiced it the way Aes Sedai practice most things, with patience and an unreadable calm. She was Andoran; the shawl she wore was Gray. The allegiance underneath both was Black.
