Illian is a wealthy port nation on the Sea of Storms in the southern Westlands, seat of the Great Hunt of the Horn, ruled by a king balanced against the Council of Nine.

Illian is named in The Eye of the World, as the city where the Great Hunt of the Horn is sworn. The nation lies in the far south of the Westlands, west of Tear, and its capital of the same name spreads across low marshy ground beside the Sea of Storms, cut by canals and smelling of salt and spice. Illianers speak in a rolling accent all their own, saying do be and did be, and their city holds the great Square of Tammaz, where Hunters gather from every land to swear their oaths whenever a Hunt for the lost Horn of Valere is called. Rule is divided by design: a king on one side of the square, the Council of Nine in a palace built just slightly smaller on the other, and an Assemblage of merchants and shipmasters beneath both. Tear is the old rival, and the two nations have gone to war over trade more times than the historians can comfortably count.
