Great Blight
The corrupted land spreading south from Shayol Ghul across the north of the world, red-soiled and hot, killing nearly all that lives and creeping outward as the Dark One's grip tightens.
The Great Blight is a corruption of the land across the north of the world, spreading outward from Shayol Ghul. It lies north of the Westlands, the Aiel Waste and Shara. The Mountains of Dhoom divide it from the Westlands, while the Waste simply runs into it, though Shadowspawn rarely venture out into the sand. Whether mountains stand between it and Shara is unknown, that country being as secretive as it is. The soil is red with the iron in it, and the climate is hot and dry, growing colder the further north a traveler goes. The Blight is the Dark One's work: his influence over the land around Shayol Ghul kills nearly every living thing, and as his grip on the world tightens, more ground is corrupted. It has been reported now and then to recede by a few miles, which is very unusual.
