Gray Ajah

The Gray Ajah belongs to the order of the White Tower laid out across the early books of The Wheel of Time, beginning in The Eye of the World. Grays devote themselves to mediation, diplomacy, and the law. A sister of the Ajah studies the statutes, customs, and grievances of every land so that she can draft a treaty, arbitrate a border, advise a throne, or sit as judge when asked, and Gray hands have helped close countless wars across three thousand years; tradition credits a Gray with the Compact of the Ten Nations itself. The Ajah prizes consensus above nearly everything, holding that there are few disputes talk cannot settle if the talk is patient enough. Its head is called the Head Clerk, a modest title for the society that writes the agreements kings sign. Grays tend to be poised, deliberate, and formidably patient, at their best in a room where everyone else has stopped listening.
