Aiel taken captive in battle, who serve their captor for a year and a day and do no violence.
A gai'shain is an Aiel taken in battle who owes toh to the captor and discharges it by serving one year and a day, obeying humbly, touching no weapon and doing no violence. Some may not be taken at all: a Wise One, a blacksmith, a child, a woman with child or with a child under the age of ten. Ownership is a variable matter, since a gai'shain swears to one person yet is often instructed to obey others as well.
