The Flame of Tar Valon is the official symbol of the White Tower and of the Amyrlin Seat, and the counterpart of the Dragon's Fang. It is an ancient device whose original meaning has been forgotten. In the Age of Legends the Flame and the Dragon's Fang together formed the symbol of the Aes Sedai; after the Breaking and the splitting away of the men, the Flame took on a meaning of its own. Ordinary people no longer connect it with women who channel, and its origins have passed out of common knowledge, though superstition still treats it as a sign of the Aes Sedai. The Flame of Tar Valon is also a title of the Amyrlin Seat, used when the Keeper of the Chronicles announces her to the Hall of the Tower and in official correspondence.
