Faolain Orande

Faolain keeps watch in the novices' quarters of the White Tower, posted outside the room where Egwene al'Vere is confined under Sheriam Sedai's orders and forbidden to speak with anyone. The duty gives her scope for what she does best. She listens for the smallest breach of the rules, hoping to catch her charge in one, and she works to a pattern: a show of sympathy at the door first, then open hostility when the softness fails to draw anything out.

The assignment does not sit well with her. Faolain complains about the behavior of the girl she guards and learns that in the Tower complaints carry a price; hers earns her a spell raking the paths in the Spring Garden. She is that kind of watcher: false warmth over real spite, a sharp eye for other people's transgressions, and no particular skill at keeping herself out of trouble. Even standing guard over a silent door, she manages to end up punished alongside the punished.
