Dreadlords
Dreadlords were channelers sworn to the Shadow who commanded the Dark One's armies in the Trolloc Wars, a name three thousand years old that has not lost its power to frighten.
Dreadlords belong to the dark history recounted in The Wheel of Time from The Eye of the World onward. In the Trolloc Wars, when the Shadow's hordes nearly drowned civilization, its armies were commanded by Dreadlords: men and women able to channel who went over to the Dark One willingly and were set in authority above even the Myrddraal. They were not the Forsaken, though frightened people sometimes confused the two; the Forsaken lay sealed at Shayol Ghul, and the Dreadlords were channelers of the Third Age who chose the Shadow for power's sake. The histories record that the Dreadlords of that era were wiped out with the Shadow's defeat at the Wars' end. Three thousand years have made the name no softer. It survives as an accusation hung on false Dragons and Aes Sedai alike by the suspicious, and as a whispered question about what the Shadow will field when the Last Battle comes.
