The Dark One is the dread power that Two Rivers folk say by rote is held with the Forsaken in Shayol Ghul, past the Great Blight, shut away there by the Creator at the making of the world.
Rand also calls him the Shepherd of the Night and recites that the Creator's hand shields the whole world. In the Two Rivers even saying his name is held to invite bad luck. Mat links old Bili Congar's naming of him to the cutworm and the fever that followed, and Nynaeve scolds Mat for goading Bili into it. Some old tales hold that the Aes Sedai serve him, though Mat notes that not all of them say so.
