Dark One

The Dark One stands behind every threat in The Wheel of Time, named from the first chapters of The Eye of the World. Catechism across the Westlands teaches that the Creator imprisoned him at the moment of creation, sealing him away from the Pattern of the world at Shayol Ghul. His true name, Shai'tan, is almost never spoken, for naming him is held to draw his eye, and folk reach instead for the Father of Lies, the Lord of the Grave, and a dozen names more. In the Age of Legends a bore was drilled into his prison, and though the seals set over it hold, they hold imperfectly. His taint lies on saidin, the male half of the One Power, and his creatures, Trollocs and Myrddraal and worse, breed in the Blight that surrounds his prison. What he wants, prophecy and the Shadow's own servants agree, is to break free, unmake the Wheel of Time, and remake all of existence in his image.
