Common Chant

Common Chant is the least used of the story-telling forms among professional entertainers such as gleemen and bards. It sits below Plain Chant and High Chant: an unstylised way of speaking, the way anyone would talk to a friend or a neighbour, and written Common Chant is very rare. Stories told in it are usually invented accounts of some supposed figure out of history, passed from one commoner to another, though a few began in real events and have drifted a long way in the retelling. Because the audience is farmers and townsfolk, the subjects tend to be what they know, farming and short journeys and small trades and local festivals, and the tales are often comical. The great legends are told in the higher forms.
