Cadsuane Melaidhrin was, for centuries, the most powerful Aes Sedai of the Green Ajah alive, a figure whose strength in the One Power alone set her apart from every sister of her age.

By the time she appeared at The Gates of Heaven, an inn in the city of Canluum, Cadsuane had long since passed into legend among her own kind. Sisters spoke of her the way people speak of storms and mountains: older than memory and beyond argument. She had withdrawn into semi-retirement, yet retirement sat lightly on her. She still moved through the world as an Aes Sedai in full, and wherever she stood, the room arranged itself around her.

Her authority did not rest on rank alone. It came from a force of personality that pressed on everyone near her, an imperiousness so complete that obedience often followed before anyone thought to question it. She commanded rather than requested, and her wisdom was of the blunt kind, delivered plainly and backed by the unmistakable sense that she would enforce it herself if she had to. Even other sisters, women accustomed to deference from the rest of the world, bent under that gaze.

What set her apart most, though, was her eye for strength. Centuries of watching the White Tower had taught her to measure a woman's potential in the Power at a glance, and to take a proprietary interest in any sister who might one day approach her own. In Canluum she was one Aes Sedai among several under a single roof, but there was never any doubt, to those sisters or anyone else, whose presence filled the inn.
