Brown Ajah

The Brown Ajah belongs to the fabric of the White Tower described from the early books of The Wheel of Time, beginning in The Eye of the World. Brown sisters dedicate themselves to knowledge: seeking it out, preserving it, and setting it down against the ages, from histories and philosophies to the workings of the One Power. The Tower's great library, one of the wonders of Tar Valon, is largely their charge. The Ajah has a reputation to match its purpose. Browns are pictured as dreamy and rumpled, absent from the world around them, ink on their fingers and their minds three books deep, and many sisters find the picture useful; more than one Brown wears vagueness as a mask over very sharp attention. Whatever the manner, the Ajah holds that what is once known must never be allowed to vanish, for an age that loses its knowledge loses itself.
