Bayle Domon
Bayle Domon is a river captain with a low, hard voice, who drives his boat and crew hard and rails at contrary winds.
Stocky and round-faced, Bayle Domon owns the Spray as well as commanding her. He talks fast, saying 'be' where others would say 'is' and 'no' in place of 'not', and his stare can be entirely without expression.
On deck Domon paces with a heavy tread, bellowing orders and swearing at anyone too slow for his liking. He has hard words for slow oarsmen and for any line handled badly, and his crew keep their grumbling quiet when he is near. Below, his cabin in the stern stretches the width of the ship and is kept tidy, with coats and cloaks on pegs behind the door, a broad bed along one side and a heavy table on the other. Its one chair, high-backed and sturdy-armed, is the captain's, and visitors make do with chests and benches.
