Band of the Red Hand
The Band of the Red Hand, Shen an Calhar in the Old Tongue, is a company of soldiers taking its name from a hero-band of lost Manetheren said to have fallen defending their king.
The Band of the Red Hand takes shape amid the events of the war. Its name is far older than the company. Shen an Calhar, the Band of the Red Hand, rides out of the legends of Manetheren, the lost nation whose death in the Trolloc Wars is told: a band of heroes said to have been the last to fall, defending King Aemon himself, when Manetheren died. The company that takes up the name in the present age begins as a gathering of Cairhienin and Tairen soldiers thrown together by war, and it drills into a disciplined force of horse and foot under a banner bearing the ancient sign. Its structure borrows deliberately from the armies of older ages, ordered in banners and squadrons rather than feudal levies. Soldiers seek it out for pay, for pride, and because the Band carries a name for luck that no quartermaster can explain.
