Asha'man is the name Rand al'Thor gives the men who learn to channel saidin at the farm outside Caemlyn that its students call the Black Tower. The word comes from the Old Tongue for guardian, one who defends what is right and will not yield even when hope is gone. Each recruit begins as a soldier, a Dedicated wears a silver sword on the high collar of his black coat, and a full Asha'man adds a dragon in gold and red enamel. Under Mazrim Taim they train hard and fast, as weapons against the Shadow.
