Adeleas Namelle was an Aes Sedai of the Brown Ajah who, decades before the main story begins, had retired with her sister Vandene to write a history of the world, the two women so alike that even those who knew them struggled to tell them apart.

Adeleas Namelle lived in Tifan's Well, in a house shared with her sister Vandene. A garden lay behind the house, a barn stood near it, and the village made a small and quiet setting for a retreat the two women had chosen freely and kept for decades. Both had grown elderly there, and the years had settled them into the place the way long residence settles anyone.

The center of the household was the history. Both sisters gave their days to the work, and neither treated retirement as a reason to think less. The scholar in Adeleas had not dulled at all. Her learning stayed exact; she knew precisely what a warding could and could not keep out, and spoke of such things with the certainty of long study.

Little else intruded. The garden was for air, the barn for the ordinary business of a country household, and the writing went on. In that house the history came first, and everything else arranged itself around it.
