An a'dam is a Seanchan device for controlling a woman who can channel: a silver collar and a bracelet joined by a leash, the whole of it made in segments fitted together so cunningly that the joins cannot be found. The woman in the collar is damane, the woman holding the bracelet is sul'dam, and the link between them runs one way only. The sul'dam decides whether the damane reaches the Source at all, and can visit pain or sickness on her at a whim, so obedience follows without a word spoken. To Seanchan eyes none of this is cruelty. A damane is valuable property, lethal if left loose, and a sul'dam is the skilled handler who keeps her useful.
